NAPLAN Information for Parents

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. It provides valuable insight into students' literacy and numeracy skills, helping parents, teachers, and schools understand their progress.

Why is NAPLAN important?
NAPLAN assesses essential skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and numeracy. It helps identify students' strengths and areas for improvement, supporting teachers in tailoring their teaching to meet students' needs.

How does NAPLAN work?
Students complete NAPLAN online, with the exception of the Year 3 writing test, which remains on paper. The online format uses adaptive testing, meaning questions adjust based on students' responses to provide more precise results.

How are results used?
NAPLAN results are reported against national proficiency standards in four levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs Additional Support. Schools use these results to guide teaching strategies, while parents can use them to discuss their child's progress with teachers.

Supporting your child
NAPLAN is not a test students need to study for. The best way to support your child is to encourage a positive mindset and reassure them to simply do their best.
